Description
The original Armstrong Performance Carbon Mast — the Mk I that set the standard for premium carbon foil masts before the Mk II evolution. Developed with Armstrong's America's Cup foil design partners, the Performance Mk I uses premium Toray intermediate and high modulus carbon fibre, with every section from base plate to fuselage connection tuned for maximum efficiency. Stiff, fast and refined — still a premium-tier mast even as the Mk II takes the lineup forward.
Six lengths 655–1035 mm — broader length range than the current Mk II (which tops out at 935 mm). Fully compatible with the Armstrong A+ System. From £1,299. Free UK postage.
⚠️ Predecessor to the current Performance Mk II Carbon Mast. The Mk II offers stiffer construction (+30% bending, +20% torsional) at the same price band; this Mk I represents the original Performance Mast generation. Available while stocks last.
The Original Premium Carbon Mast
Product overview
The Performance Carbon Mast (Mk I) set the standard for premium carbon foil masts when Armstrong launched it. Every millimetre was designed to give the rider the very best experience possible, turning an everyday session into something special. The design was developed with Armstrong's America's Cup foil design partners. The goal called for a unique blend of strength, stiffness, minimal drag and light weight. Combining CFD analysis with expert insight and the feedback of key team riders resulted in every section of the mast from top plate to fuselage connection being designed for maximum efficiency and the best feel possible.
Manufactured with premium Toray intermediate and high-modulus carbon fibre. Sophisticated engineering and top-shelf materials give the mast a unique combination of efficiency, stiffness and control at speed.
Key features
Premium Toray carbon construction. Intermediate and high-modulus carbon fibre throughout. Stiff, light, fast.
America's Cup-derived design. Developed in collaboration with Armstrong's America's Cup foil engineering team. Each section CFD-tuned for efficiency.
Six lengths. Broader length range than the current Mk II — includes 655, 725, 795, 865, 935 and 1035 mm. The 1035 is unique to this Mk I generation; the new lineup doesn't offer that length.
Armstrong A+ System compatibility. Same proprietary connection system as the Mk II / X masts — fully compatible with every Armstrong front foil, fuselage and stabiliser.
Limited availability. Pre-Mk II generation. Once these are sold, the Mk II Carbon and Performance Mk II Carbon take over the lineup.
Length guide
655 mm. Surf foiling, prone, smaller riders, tight manoeuvrability.
725 mm. Compact wing / surf foiling.
795 mm. The wing-foil sweet spot. Most common choice.
865 mm. Bigger swell, downwind, heavier riders.
935 mm. Specialist downwind.
1035 mm. Maximum length, downwind only. Unique to this Mk I generation — not available in the Mk II range.

Honest advice from us
The Performance Carbon Mk I is the predecessor to the current Performance Mk II Carbon Mast — the original premium carbon Armstrong mast. The Mk II is stiffer (+30% bending, +20% torsional) at the same price band, so if you're choosing between the two and don't have a specific reason to want the Mk I, the Mk II is the more current pick.
Reasons to buy the Mk I specifically:
- You want the 1035 mm length, which only exists in this Mk I range — not in the Mk II lineup. Maximum-length downwind specialists, this is your only Armstrong premium-carbon option.
- You've ridden a Mk I before and want a known feel without paying for the marginal Mk II stiffness gain.
- You're price-sensitive and the Mk I 655 mm at £1,299 vs the Mk II 725 mm at £1,499 buys you premium-tier carbon for less.
Where it fits in the current lineup:
- Mk II Carbon Mast (£809–£959) — entry-tier 15.8 mm carbon.
- Performance Carbon Mast (Mk I) — this mast. The original premium carbon, £1,299–£1,549.
- Performance Mk II Carbon Mast (£1,499–£1,639) — the current premium all-rounder.
- Performance-X Carbon Mast (£2,139–£2,269) — specialist UHM 11.8 mm.
About this mast in North Wales. If you're after the 1035 mm for serious downwind in bigger swell, this is the only Armstrong premium-carbon mast that comes in that length. Otherwise the Mk II is probably the better pick. Call us on 01492 588001 to talk through whether the Mk I or Mk II is the right call.
About Armstrong
Armstrong is a New Zealand foil company founded by Armie Armstrong, a pioneering windsurfer and watersports innovator. Armstrong's modular A+ System has set the industry standard for foil compatibility — front wings, masts, fuselages and stabilisers all interconnect across the Armstrong range, meaning riders can progress from S1 (Step 1) beginner foils through to HA (High Aspect) racing foils without replacing their mast or board fittings. Built in Thailand at Armstrong's own facility, designed in New Zealand, ridden by world-class athletes including Austin Tovey, Noah Flegel and Annie Reickert.
